The French and British Behavior Towards The Native Americans

During the 16th and 17th centuries the British and the French treated the Indians two totally different ways. The French had a positive attitude with the Indians while the British on the other hand did not. The French went into North America with the thought of making a little money and not getting in the way of the Indians. The British wanted to dominant and control the land even if it did belong to the Indians even if that meant killing them.
When the French came over to North America they did not plan to build a community and stay. They came over with one thought in mind, to make a little money. So by having this plan they weren't really threatening to the Indians or their land. When the French came over they came in small numbers. By doing this the Indians didn't feel defenseless towards the French. While staying on the Indians land they held a strong tie with them. They tended to intermarry and even adopted some of their culture. Many of the French also learned the Indians language so that they could communicate well with them. The French set up trade stations and traded with the Indians among others. The French maintained this positive relationship with the Indians because they didn't want to control and rule their land.
When the British came to North America they had no regard for the Indians or their land. They came over with the intent of ruling and controlling the land no matter who was living on it or even who owned it. The Puritans came over and felt that the Indians were sinners in that they lived off the land in natural ways so they felt that if in gods eyes the Indians were sinners then it didn't really matter what happened to them. The Puritans were just looking for a way in gods eyes to make stealing the Indian's land and even killing them okay on their part. When the British came some tried to forcefully convert the Indians to Christianity and the Indians did not like this.
