When Andrei was a little kid his mother always told his sister and him how his older brother, Stepan, was kidnapped and cannibalized in 1930's. No record exists of Stepan's birth or death, no proof that he ever existed. Andrei's mother told the story so convincingly that her kids actually believed her. This had a terrible psychological effect on young Andrei. At 5 years old Andrei witnessed or at least heard about Nazi atrocities when the village was overrun by German troops. His father, Roman, was captured by the Germans and was only released 1945 at prisoner of war camp. Andrei already committed communist he agreed to the decision of his father's betrayal of the "mother land". Andrei was always teased about it at school. He was picked on in schoolyard so he became really really shy. He had a hard time covering up that even in his teenage years he had a bedwetting problem Andrei grew up nearsighted half-blind, he didn't want to be teased. Also he suffered from a sexual dysfunction beginning in adolescence which that rendent him periodically impotent. Because he was shy, the lack of his social skills prevented him from interacting with girls and once he did persuade a girl to go to bed with him he was unable to perform and was ridiculed. .
Andrei then realized that violence was more of a turn-on to him than sex. When Andrei left school he wanted to enter the University of Moscow and failed. Chikatilo obtained a hob as a telephone engineer. Then in 1963 his sister moved and moved in with Andrei.
