Communication in Team Development

The world is advancing at an alarming rate and so must business practices improve and look for new ways of increasing productivity and efficiency. Businesses have been using the idea of "work teams" more prominently in recent years (Esquivel & Kleiner, 1996). However very few understand just how to form a great team with highly regarded communication skills (Huszczo & Hoffman, 1999). Talking about efficient and productive teams is an easy and enjoyable task. Discussing not-so-perfect work teams and discovering solutions to their many problems is not so simple (Kipp & Kipp, 2000). This essay will examine the five stages of team development (Tuckman, 1965) and provide solutions to common problems a team might face because of poor intra-personal, inter-personal and public communication. Communication barriers facing work teams may be broken down in most instances. Communication cannot be avoided nor can it be reversed. Effort to improve communication within the work team must be present from the first stage of the development process, which is "Forming". .
The first stage in creating a work team is known as the forming stage. Strong communication must be present from the very beginning of this stage. This will ensure a smooth and swift transition to the stages that follow (Tuckman, 1965). Communication barriers can be broken down with the correct preparation. As the members have most likely met only recently there is much uncertainty about the team's goals and members" identities. Clear and precise inter-personal communication is very important at this stage. Immediate attention must be on the members" familiarity with each other. Members of the team should get to know each other on a personal level and pay close attention to identifying and improving the communication skills of the introverts in the group (if any). This will help to eliminate loafing amongst members that are quiet and reserved by nature.
