Perhaps in this day and age politics and religion are intertwined. .
For instance, one example of religious politics would be the issue of homosexual marriage. The biggest controversy about the issue is that it goes against the bible. Jerry Falwell wants a constitutional amendment to "protect- marriage in our country. Falwell has gone as far as forming an Anti - Gay Marriage Coalition. (World Wide Web, 2003) In August of 2003 Jerry said, "I am dedicating my talents, time and energies over the next few years to the passage of an amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which will protect the traditional family from its enemies who wish to legalize same-sex marriage and other diverse "family" forms." (World Wide Web, 2003) The amendment will simply state: "Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union between a man and a woman. Neither this constitution or the constitution of any state, nor state or federal law, shall be construed to require that marital status or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon unmarried couples or groups." (World Wide Web, 2003) Falwell has also stated, "it is imperative that we remove the sacred biblical definition of marriage from the reach of un-elected and valueless federal judges who would seek to protect newly fashionable sexual trends by recklessly affording them with legal protections."" (World Wide Web, 2003) This isn't the first time Jerry Falwell has attacked the gay community. Falwell tried to portray gays as child molesters during the attempted passing of the Miami Gay Civil Rights act in the 1970's. (World Wide Web, 2003) After his strong influence it .
took more than twenty years to get the legislation passed. This clearly shows the power of religious suggestion. If he can convince people that all gay people are child molesters, then what else is he capable of? .
Although Jerry Falwell has many followers, he also has many people who are disgusted with him.
