20th Century Essay


            The Age of Reason, The Industrial Age and The Romanticism period all were just a glimpse of the 19th century. By now America was living in urban housing developments and driving around in motor vehicles. It was no longer how many horses pulled your carriage but how much horsepower was under your hood. Dirt roads were no longer dusty and dirty, for that matter they weren't even dirt they were pavement and or stone. Even our language was being updated with words like futurism and expressionism. We no longer dreamed of what a lighted house would be like but what the moon was like. .
             Nineteenth century and contemporary America has a divider between the two of them for it was War World I. War World I began as a crusade to keep the peace and to remain the home of the free. "At the war's end, President Woodrow Wilson Proclaimed that Americans had gained everything for which they had fought" (McMicheal 1556). Then less the a quarter century later we would proclaim the same reasons for entering what was World War II. .
             After War World I a new battle broke out this time in America a battle of women's right to vote. Many protests and marches took place, many where put in jail and even then they refused to eat to protest for they"re right to vote. One year later the Nineteenth Amendment was declared, the right to vote could no longer be denied on account of sex. .
             The arts saw their time for rejoice in the middle of the two wars with the opening of new museums and galleries were established in large and small cities throughout the US. .
             But through the hardships of the great depression and the struggle of new aspiring black artist to make an impact with there work the 20th century was a time of rejoice, war and the freedom of expression. .
