The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is one of the most important legends in the folklore writing. Written by Washington Irving, everybody knows the story and how it inspired a lot of horrors writers to make movies. The story is about Ichabod Crane a schoolmaster and a headless horseman that taunts the town of Sleepy Hollow looking to find a head that fits. The headless horseman is said to be "the ghost of a Hessian trooper, whose head had been carried away by a cannon-ball, in some nameless battle during the revolutionary war."(Washington 575) What I am going to share with you is the plot, the characters and the setting of the story. .
The plot of the sleepy hollow begins with Ichabod Crane who goes to the house of Katrina Van Tassel, the daughter of Van Tassel. He has come to the Van Tassel's house, to make some people believe that he is there for an official reason. But in verity, he's there because he loves Katrina. Ichabod then has to compete with Brom Van Brunt, a man that is very strong and has a lot of friends. When Brom learns that Ichabod is courting Katrina, Ichabod became the object of persecution. Brom then invites Ichabod to a merrymaker at Van Tassel. During the night, he dances with Katrina and listen to the stories about the Headless Horseman and others legends. The climax is the headless horseman attacks Ichabod in the night. The plots end when Ichabod Crane disappears, and his body is never found. "The next morning the old horse was found without his saddle.Ichabod did not make his appearance at breakfast- dinner-hour came, but no Ichabod."(590).
The main character of the story is Ichabod Crane. There are others minors" characters such as Katrina Van Tassel, the girl that Brom and Ichabod love. Brom Van Brunt, the man that competes with Ichabod Crane for Katrina Van Tassel's love. We learn by the author that Ichabod Crane has a soft and foolish heart. In the reading of the story, we see that Ichabod is a peacekeeper and does not wish to fight with Brom.
