Marketing Ethics Paper

com is a website created for the purpose of downloading hacked versions of a P2P (Peer to Peer) file sharing program called "Kazaa". These programs have all the features of Kazaa, which is a lot like napster used to be, without the pop-up advertising that is packaged in the software, hence the name "kazaalite". However if you check the disclaimers found on the kazaalite.com website you will find that the site is supposed to be a "news-based" site. As quoted by the creators of the website, "Kazaalite.com is not a site devoted to the project known as "kazaalite" not are we affiliated with its creators. We are a news site with news on Peer2Peer (P2P) software developments. We also have news on other issues we classify as important such as news on Windows. The site Kazaalite.com uses the Postnuke (www.postnuke.com) Content Management System which has a primary focus on delivering news and interactivity such as instant messages and message boards. All modules on the website are part of the Postnuke package unless otherwise stated." .
That statement is all fine and dandy, but if you look at the site you will find that the only interactions you can make are to either download the illegal, hacked software, or make a donation to the webmaster's paypal account. There is not a single reference to Microsoft's Windows in any way, or the "Postnuke" thing discussed in the website disclaimer. Worst of all, when you load the page you are bombarded with annoying pop-up ads! .
I would consider hosting a website that contains hacked software a very unethical practice. Sure you can hide behind legality disclaimers claiming that you didn't develop the software; you just got permission to distribute it from someone else, but that doesn't change the fact that you are distributing illegal software. If the webmaster who hosts the site Kazaalite.com would be held liable for all the content on his page, such as the kazaalite software, the site would be shut down, and the webmaster could face not only extensive fines for copyright infringement, but also prosecution and jail time!.
