Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo presents an interesting subject for review this week. As I reflect on her work, it is evident that her personal experiences had a strong influence on both her style and the subjects of her paintings. I am referring to her tragic accident as a teenager, her political views, and her attraction to Diego Marti. For this course, I will try to stay focused on the aspects of Kahlo that represent her Latin American heritage and the society that she lived in.
The movie that we watched in class first addressed Frida's heritage (German and Mexican). I found this interesting, as my experience with Latin Americans has been that they tend to pay close attention to specific racial characteristics. Frida often "played" with these differences as she would alternate between showing herself wearing the traditional European dress and wearing the festive and less formal dresses of the Mexicans. We saw examples of many different portraits that had a very "Mexican" flavor to them -- dresses, flowers, farmers, etc.
I would like to note my reaction to Frida's love life. I am loath to stereotype. However, we have learned in class that Mexican men have a propensity to take on a mistress. Frida's life provides a tragic example of these consequences. Her own sister slept with her husband, yet she stayed with Diego until the very end (with the exception of their divorce for one year). This tragedy of love allowed Frida the opportunity to explore new feelings through her painting. The portraits depicting the blood flowing from her heart are very interesting. I must admit that I did not care for the paintings with the little Diego's etched in her forehead. These issues gave me greater insight into how the Latinos approach romance and marriage.
Another area of influence in Frida's life was politics. She has depicted the US as an undesirable place full of smokestacks and cities.
