Alkiline Earth Metals

The ratios of positive ions of calcium, strontium, and barium react with negative oxalate ions to produce compounds. The alkaline earth metals contain beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, and radium. The alkaline earth metals are in group two. The positive ions of most of the elements react with the negative oxalate ions to form compounds that are insoluble in water. As the periodic table goes down the group, the elements are more reactive than the one before. If there is an equal amount of both solutions in the well, then the solutions will react more with eachother because there is a same ratio of the solutions.
             Materials.
             96-well microplate 0.1M calcium nitrate solution .
microtip pipets 0.1M strontium nitrate solution.
3 toothpicks 0.1M barium nitrate solution.
marking pen 0.1M sodium oxalate solution.
             Procedure.
             1. Get a 96-well microplate and four micropipets.
             2. Label the micropipets calcium, strontium, barium, and sodium.
             3. Put some of each of the solutions in the appropriate micropipets.
             4. Add one drop of the calcium solution in the H 1 well. (as shown in figure 1).
             5. Add two drops into H 2.
             6. Add three drops in H 3 and so on so that H 9 gets nine drops.
             7. Add one drop of the sodium solution to H 9. ( as shown in figure 1).
             8. Add two drops to H 8 and so on so that H 1 gets nine drops. .
             9. Stir the mixtures with a toothpick.
             10. When the insoluble product has settled, stoop down so that your eyes are level with the well plate.
             11. Record the data of the well that has the most of the insoluble product in the data table. .
             12. Repeat steps 4 through 11 with the strontium and oxalate solutions. .
             13. Repeat steps 4 through 11 with the barium and oxalate solutions.
             14. Dispose of the substances appropriatly according to their Flinn disposal.
             Data.
             Wells with most Pecipitate .
Sodium oxalate combined with # of well with most percipitate Drops of oxalate solution drops of group 2 ion solution.
