Hephaestus

Hephaestus or Vulcan in Roman was the Greek god of fire and the forge. This is one of the stories of how he was born. Hera, his mother, got tired of seeing Zues have children with other women, so she gave birth to Hephaestus. But Hephaestus was ugly and she felt no love for him. So one day he was carrying wine to bring to the other gods and he tripped and spilled it all over Hera. All the other gods were on the floor laughing. She was so furious that she grabbed hold of him by the ankle and threw him out of heaven. Another story states that he was standing up for his mother Hera when Zeus just threw him out. He fell for three days and landed in Lemnos. The landing crippled Hephaestus and after being rescued by mermen, they taught him how to forge in underwater volcanoes. He stayed there and perfected his skill for nine years and surpassed his mentors. Once he was the finest craftsmen in the world, he climbed back up to Olympus and made lightning bolts for Zeus and arrows for Artemis. He married Aphrodite, the goddess of love. Cyclopes were faithful followers and he taught them how to forge. He made all kinds of weapons and armor for the gods. He made cauldrons that needed no fire to heat them, horseshoes for seahorses, lighthouses of bronze, tripods that could walk, and magic armor that could never be broken. But by far his greatest artwork that he made was Pandora. He is associated with volcanic areas, especially the island of Lemnos. He is often pictured carrying a hammer and a clay pot. He was worshipped by other blacksmiths, who were often also lame because only healthy men could be warriors or hunters or farmers. When the age came when people no longer needed blacksmiths and forgot about them, the also forgot about Hephaestus.
