Evaluate the effectiveness of the ending of Mother Courage a

This style of theatre does not allow for any escapism and insured that the audience did not become involved emotionally or romantically with the play. They are left to accept the world as it is. (Rorrision 1983).
The alienation effect is a key device used by Brecht throughout the play. Brecht defines alienation himself as: "To alienate an incident or character means to take from the incident or character what makes it obvious, familiar or readily understandable, so as to create wonderment and curiosity." By constantly expressing the artificiality of the play, Brecht sets a distance between the characters and the audience, this distance makes the audience think for themselves and also prevents them from wallowing in emotional thoughts.
One of the ways Brecht alienates his audience is by the way that the set is displayed. In Mother Courage the set is stark and plain. The bare minimum of props are used throughout the play. This is no more apparent than in the final scene of the play as Mother Courage is seen on stage, dragging the cart alone. Throughout the entire play there is a constant stream of bright, white light, regardless of the time of day. Brecht insisted on having this light as it, "enabled [him] to get rid of any remnants of "atmosphere" such would have given the incidents a slightly romantic flavour." Therefore, the presence of such light further prevented the audience from feeling involved in the play.
Placards are featured at the beginning of each scene detailing the approximate date the scene is taking place, which characters will be involved in the scene and what main event will happen in the scene. In scene one we are introduced to Mother Courage and told that she, "loses a son", (3) by the use of these placards Brecht is changing the way that the audience views the play. Removing all suspense from the scene enables the audience to concentrate on issues that Brecht is raising, such as dominant ideologies in society.
