Community/ Woodbridge NJ

The world population is a growing, pulsating entity. It is an undeniable fact that each individual on this planet, will at one time or another, choose to join some kind of group or identify himself or herself with a specific subculture. These communities are part of the human need to belong and socialize with other people. Sometimes race, religion, or politics bonds people to a common cause, but in this great land of opportunity the melting- pot effect has joined people of different races and beliefs. This diversity can be found in any city, suburb, or neighborhood in the United States. So in true All-American fashion, it is only proper to discover the history of the community one lives in.
An immigrant from Colombia, South America in the late seventies, the American dream was knocking on the door. At first Jamaica, a suburb of Queens, New York was the picture perfect stage to play out this American dream. In time the parental units realized that the low income housing and the high crime rate of the neighborhood was not conducive to raising impressionable kids. After a few years of factory work and saving money, moving just across the river made sense. Woodbridge, New Jersey was quiet with lots of open space for kids to grow and play. The worries of high crime that Jamaica offered were left behind. Woodbridge seemed too quiet for a transplant from Queens, although the change in atmosphere was greatly appreciated. Clay pits and open grass land littered most of the town in the eighties, later on in the nineties these open spaces became housing developments and cooperate buildings. This would signal the commercial boom that has choked the town for the past decade or so.
Three hundred thirty eight years of history dot the landscape of Woodbridge. Most landmarks have been standing so long that one overlooks the stories these relics represent. It is clearly evident that through the years Woodbridge residents have been proud to preserve and display the relics that tell the story of the oldest original township in the state (Woodbridge).
