The Birthmark

But, she no longer wanted such treatment so she began to think whether or not she should let Aylmer work his magic and remove the birthmark even she began to hate. All she wanted was for her dear husband to love her. The complete removal of the birthmark would be the only way to make them both happy. Or would it? .
Despite Aylmer's genius, intellect, and love for his wife, he was still blinded by greed. In fact, he was a highly respected man of science. He had for years studied the work of Albertus Magnus, Cornelius Agrippa, and Paracelsus. Aylmer was "an eminent proficient in every branch of natural philosophy."" Upon seeing Georgiana the first time, he was instantly put under a spell and fell in love. Aylmer then pursued, persuaded, and took this beautiful woman as his wife leaving all his science behind. He is a man of passion for both the sciences and his wife. But, his wife alone would not be enough. Her intense beauty would not come close to fulfill his wants and needs. He demanded perfection and nothing else. Aylmer would not let his world be tainted by flaws. Aylmer though that the "world [ought to] possess one living specimen of ideal loveliness without the semblance of a flaw,"" that one specimen being his living. He would and could not live with the birthmark knowing something could be done--that something must be done. So his greed for perfection manifested itself in himself and grew. His magical science that was so highly touted would not come to toil. "Aylmer discovered that this was the case with himself- knowing that it could come at his wife's expense. That would be a risk Aylmer was willing to take, his wife's life for the sake of perfection.
In love with her husband and willing to please him, Georgiana finally decided to let Aylmer remove the birthmark he so hated. However such a simple request would prove to be dreadful. Upon hearing her willingness, Aylmer grew with delight.
