             Harriet Jacobs is another example of a strong willed, courageous black woman. Just as her grandmother had fought through turbulent times, she did the same. Harriet faced many trials in her life, from fighting off a forceful maniac slaveholder, to staying in a blank by balnk room for seven years. With age, throughout her life she viewed her challenges as a source of motivation. .
             Harriet faced many challenges that tested her character and will. She had to live a life as a slave under the callous Dr. Norcom. He abused her multiple times, and tormented her mentally as well. Dr. Norcom threatened her life as well as her children's lives. She found a way to always believe she would be free someday or lead a happy life out of the grip or Norcom.
             As a female it is definitely obvious Norcom had an attraction to Harriet physically, and hassled Harriet for this reason. She always managed to find ways to get out of possible situations where she might be forced to perform sexual acts. Harriet was definitely a courageous woman for standing up for herself, despite the fact of being a member of the least dominant race and gender.
             As a female slave, through Harriet's story, we can learn some significant differences in the way females were treated compare to males. The difference between the male and female slaves is evident with the work they were given during their days on the plantation. "I would sit by her side (Harriet Jacobs mistress prior to Mr. Fitch) sewing for hours diligently." Writes Harriet. Women slaves were given tasks inside the home, such as preparing dinner, sewing, cleaning, and other services performed stereotypically by women. The purpose for having each gender as slaves was obvious. Women were for housework, and men were for the hard labor. .
             Relations between slave owners and their female slaves often aroused a jealously in the wife that would diminish their marriage slowly due to deceit and distrust.
