The audience are introduced to the characters by close ups on their faces to really show their emotions and what they are thinking. In the first scene of the film Roxie Hart is at a show, watching her idol Velma Kelly. The camera angle used is a close up on her face to show her emotions that she really wants to be on the stage, which is reinforced by the cutting between the look on Roxie's face and the sexy dance moves of Velma Kelly. This shows that Roxie is clearly in awe of Velma's strong and powerful dancing. Roxie is represented as a nave. This is shown by the fact that her lover Fred Casely can clearly control her, and also by the light dress codes used to show she is not very powerful. Although she is an aggressive woman who will do anything to get her way onto the stage. During this scene the narrative suddenly cuts into Roxie on the stage, dressed the same as Velma and clearly loving the attention. This is the first time the audience is bought into Roxie's imagination and this happens at various times throughout the film. Roxie uses her imagination on the stage as a diversion of real life.
             The audience is introduced to Velma as a very seductive and powerful woman, this is shown by several character traits. Velma's body language is very strong; the first parts of her we see are her legs, which are striding to the stage door with purpose and authority.
