Rubin Carter

1985 was the year that many see as a year that not just freed Rubin, but also many others who were the victims of injustices. Rubin's courage, faith and determination, gave others a chance to let their voice be heard. But Rubin "Hurricane" Carter did not work alone; he had the strength of God with him throughout his entire journey. Throughout Rubin's struggle in jail he managed to accomplish more than many on the outside world could ever dream of accomplishing. Jail was and still is no place for an innocent human being, it seems worthless for Rubin to have sat down to write even though for years he had not stood up to live. But Rubin's writing along with his faith, determination and love from 4 Canadians would be what ultimately freed him from his misery. .
Jail was no place for Rubin; Rubin was not a criminal he was a victim of racism over reason. Rubin was not like any other inmate, he slept when everyone else was awake and kept his eyes open while everyone else had drifted off to sleep. He refused to be told what to do like the other "criminals", and with good reason; Rubin had just been at the wrong place at the wrong time. Rubin kept away from the inmates because he felt that most would belittle his ambitions, the inmates who were there for Rubin offered him the love he needed to "bust out". It is hard to believe that the colour of ones skin could land a man in prison. In reality it was not just the man's colour that landed him in jail, but it was the fact that he was a coloured man who had a good job and was looked up too. The case against Rubin Carter played out as if the entire thing had been staged. All evidence pointed in Rubin's favour but when the verdict was revealed, Rubin came out on the wrong end of the draw. It was even said that the "Key witnesses" were paid to testify against Rubin, and Rubins alleged partner in crime was offered a lump some of money to also testify against Rubin, but he refused.
