From Segregated to Multicultural School


            The Tallahassee Democrat published an article on Maggie B. Lewis-Butler who is currently a member of the Leon County school Board. Mrs. Lewis-Butler begin teaching at the two of the oldest prodominent black schools in Tallahassee, Old Lincoln and Griffin Junior / Senior High School. She was later affected by the new integration laws and was forced to find employment elsewhere. Mrs. Lewis-Butler was successful with finding a job at Belle Vue Middle School.
             At Belle Vue the teachers begin completing their lessons plans together because they were now teaching black and white children together. It is important that minority teachers work together with other teachers to assist them with learning to work with children from different cultures. Minority teachers are effective teachers Minority teachers bring a new perspective to the classroom because they usually come from similar backgrounds of the minority students.
             The minority teacher becomes a positive role model to children from similar cultures. Their teacher may be the only positive influence in the child's immediate life that they identify with. Minority teachers are a valuable asset to the school system. They bring their experience and knowledge to assist the students and other teachers with looking at the world from a different view. .
             Mrs. Maggie B. Lewis-Butler worked 27 years to Leon county school system as a minority teacher. Mrs. Lewis-Butler was a valuable asset for minority students during the integration She has played a big part with education students from various backgrounds and cultures. .
