The Death of the Creature Critical Essay

The preserving of the memory is not necessarily the evil per say, but it is the focus on taking pictures and videos above the actual viewing of the canyon that is at fault. If one spends the entire trip taking snapshots to save memories, but doesn't stop to savor them, then there will be little more than photographic ink on the pictures. He waited a lifetime for these precious few moments, and yet squandered them by unsuccessfully trying to capture them. The point is that some experiences can only be truly cherished by living them to the fullest while one still has them.
The final, and perhaps most pertinent point of this particular example is the alteration of the canyon in order to let the general public get "as much as they can". However, this has the exact opposite effect. The beauty of the canyon as Garcia Lopez de Cardenas discovered it. Guided tours of the canyon, donkey rides, hotels and lodges, observatories with pay-per-view telescopes and more things so courteously provided by the Park Service "improved" the sight, letting the average tourist see the canyon to its fullest. However, Cardenas didn't need a tour or a lodge or a telescope to see the beauty of the canyon. He had no idea when he set out it would be there, and when he did find it, it was pure and pristine, one of the few untouched natural wonders left in the world. Man has a certain tendency to, in the quest of improving the world, end up creating something sterile, unreal, and manufactured. In seeking to improve his view of the canyon, man has chosen to make canyon conform to man, not man to canyon, as it was meant to be.
Bellhops, clerks, park rangers, and others might at first see the wonder of the canyon. However, eventually its awe might wear off, losing its magical appeal to these people. They take for granted what many people never have the chance, the time, or the money to see. It loses its magic, its sparkle, the natural feelings that come with the viewing of the Grand Canyon.
