"Imagine all the people living in peace. You may say I"m a dreamer, but I"m not the only one, I hope someday you"ll join us, and the world will be as one." .
John Lennon is a figure in history that will never be forgotten. He started the band The Beatles, who changed the course of music forever. Not only is he a world renowned musician, he is also noted for his famous "Bed-In" for peace, and other nonviolent protests "against all the suffering and violence in the world." .
Lennon was born in 1940 in Liverpool, England to Julia and Freddie Lennon. His father left him when he was six years old, not returning for another twenty years. He grew up in his aunt's house, but had a strong relationship with his mother. She taught him how to play the banjo, and soon after, he began to learn the guitar. When John was eighteen years old, his mother was killed by a car, driven by an intoxicated off-duty policeman. The death of his mother deeply affected John's life, so he turned to alcohol and music to comfort himself during this rough time. .
In late 1960, he started the group, The Beatles. The members included himself, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. They started their band in Britain, but their fame was spread throughout the world, especially in the United States where the love of The Beatles was often refered to as "Beatlemania." The Beatles were responsible for Lennon's fame, which helped his peace protests become so notable throughout the world.
Soon, Lennon began to experiment with LSD and became engrossed in the art world. In 1967, Lennon attended a "psychedelic" event where he saw various artists perform, such as Pink Floyd and Yoko Ono, who would turn out to be his second wife. On March 20, 1969, John Lennon and Yoko Ono got married in Spain. They spent their honeymoon at the Amsterdam Hilton holding their famous "Bed-In" for peace. This was the first attempt for the couple to reach out to the world and express their strong desire to make the world a more peaceful place.
