Coming To America


             According to the 2000 census, minorities have increased considerably in recent decades. Americans are dealing with the effects of the growing number of non-English speaking immigrants coming to the United States each year. Many people feel that a person coming to America should be responsible for learning the language spoken in the America. However, the opinions of individual Americans are not influencing the way the united states is dealing with the issue of a multi-language society. Despite heated debate, American adults are being pressured to learn different languages to better communicate in the workplace and American students are being required to take a foreign language course in school, even though Americans are not leaving the country.
             American workers are finding that the only way to be truly successful in their career, is to learn other languages. With the United States" growing involvement in international business and the increasing multinational character of society, the importance of knowing one of more foreign languages is evident in nearly every kind of occupation. (ball state) Instead of immigrants learning the native language of the United States, Americans are required to learn languages of other cultures. American business firms are not going to hire employees based on their language skills alone, but several of these organizations are becoming increasingly aware of specific needs for foreign language. (ball stat) Many Americans live in fear because the day is coming when foreign language will be a requirement for their jobs and they wont have it. .
