Last year in Drama 1301, I was trying out for the lead part in a play dealing with the views of four Jews in a concentration camp. After the auditions, my best friend, Lori, and I were called to the teacher's desk. We both had done an especially good job in our tryouts, but she was having a hard time deciding which of us would get the main role. We both performed our audition one more time, and she told us she still could not decide between us. She asked us if we could come up with a compromise. .
We both really wanted the main part in the play, and I didn't want to give up the chance to have it. I also knew that I had played one of the main characters in the Christmas play, and she had played a very small role. I did not want to end up getting no part at all, so the next day, Lori and I had a talk with the drama teacher. .
I was willing to give Lori the main role, as long as I also played a reasonably important part in the production. The teacher had already assigned all the roles, so I would have to play a part backstage or no part at all. Then I remembered that in the Christmas play there had been a student director. I asked the teacher if there was going to be a student director in this play, and she said that in fact there was going to be. I asked if that part had been assigned and if not, could I have it. She said that would be fine, and Lori could have the main role in the play.
We worked out a compromise, and we were both happy with the parts we received. I was able to go to all the practices and tell the actors and actresses what to do to improve their performances. Being a student director was really fun, and it did not require memorizing lines. I was glad we had agreed on a compromise because it definitely worked out for the best. .
In history, there have been many compromises. A particularly important one was called "The Great Compromise, " which occurred at the Constitutional Convention in 1787 when the Constitution was being written.
