Looking Backward by Edward Bellamy

How would you feel if one day you woke up and you were in a completely different world from what you were used to? I know that it would be tough for me and it would take a lot of getting used to before I was comfortable with it. If I were to be placed in a world like the one described in Bellamy's book my life would be completely different. I think some of the main things that I would have to get used to in my life would be school, school activities, family life, social life, and how I would react to my new lifestyle.
There are many different careers that I could go in to, but I think my first choice would be teaching. In our society today teachers don't get the credit they should or get paid like they should. If you are a teacher in Bellamy's world you are getting paid the same as everyone else and it would be a great way to influence young people. Teachers in our society have to deal with kids being rude and sometimes out of control. They are expected to shape kids into the leaders of the future, but sometimes they have to deal with kids who just create trouble and don't really care about school. When teachers have to deal with this it affects the kids that really want to learn and be in school. In Bellamy's society kids are well behaved and are taught at a very young age to be respectful everyone, and that makes teaching much easier to do because all they have to do is teach and not have to worry about baby-sitting kids that don't want to be there.
I think teaching would be a very rewarding occupation to go into. You get a chance to point kids in the right direction and be a positive role model in their lives. I think that the status you get in our society today and the amount of money you earn turns people away from going into the teaching profession. People want to be looked upon highly and will go into a more glamorous job that you get paid more money to do. In Bellamy's world teachers are looked at in the same view as everyone else because no one is considered better than another person.
