All along the watchtower

Not many people are aware that Bob Dylan was the original writer and singer of "All Along the Watchtower." Since Bob Dylan wrote the song, two other widely known artists have done their own version of this song: Jimi Hendrix and The Dave Matthews Band. Although it is the same song just done by different singers, each song has its own characteristics which makes them appear as very different songs. In this paper, I will compare how each of these artists adds their own touch to the song by the use of their instruments. .
If you have ever heard any of Bob Dylan's songs, you know that he as a very mellow tone to all of them. "All Along the Watchtower" is no different. Dylan uses only a very few instruments. At the very beginning of the song, you will hear a harmonica which immediately makes you want to hear the rest of the song. The only other instruments I can hear in Dylan's version of the song are a guitar and drums. Throughout the song you hear the harmonica loudly then softly and everywhere in between. To me, I think Dylan uses the harmonica to show emotion rather than hearing all of the emotion from his lyrics. Due to the fact that Dylan only has three instruments, it gives his song a very acoustic and folky sound. Dylan's version is completely opposite that of Jimi Hendrix's.
Jimi Hendrix is obviously known for his loud and very intense guitar solos. "All Along the Watchtower" is just another loud, hard rock sounding song that Hendrix performs. In Hendrix version, it is apparent that he uses an electric guitar. However, he also uses an acoustic guitar, bass, drums, and a tambourine. Even though he didn't use many more instruments than Dylan, his electric guitar makes it sound less acoustic than Dylan's version. As I stated earlier, Dylan uses his harmonica to show the emotion of the song Hendrix however, uses his electric guitar to show the emotion. You can distinguish between the more emotional parts of the song when Hendrix goes into his guitar solo.
