STORY OF AN HOUR


            Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour," is realistic in both characters and situation. The characters are portrayed by people in the Nineteenth Century, who live for society rather than for themselves. The main character, Mrs. Louise Mallard, plays the role of two different people. Mrs. Mallard goes through a stream of emotional ties that are experienced by everyone, after finding out that her husband, Mr. Mallard is unfortunately, pronounced dead after a tragic train accident. She finds herself in a state of shock when she first hears the news while sitting at the dinner table cross from her sister, Josephine, who got the news from her husbands" best-friend Richards. The two were very careful not to upset Mrs. Mallard too much because of her known heart trouble. Her sister assists her up the stairs and later checks on her by speaking to her through a keyhole. "Louise, open the door! I beg; open the door-you will make yourself ill ." After calming herself alone upstairs, she goes through many stages of grief. The feeling as if she can not go on living life without her husband. This is a reasonable way to act when one has just lost ones lifelong mate to a tragic accident. .
             The description Chopin provides of Mrs. Mallard while upstairs alone in her bedroom suggests that the earlier view of Mrs. Mallard has some false flaws. "She is young, with a fair, calm face, whose lines modified cruelty and even certain strength." The reader will see that her .
             strength emerges after she has given in to her grief. The feeling is of finally being able to live the life of an unmarried widow woman. .
             For a moment, she allows her inner feelings of being happy, free, and having independence to come out. Mrs. Mallard allows herself to gaze out at nature. For Mrs. Mallard the street sights and sounds can only be experience from her balcony, where they float up to her and provide her with connections with life outside of her home and husband.
