How to Help People Stop Smoking

             GP's current contract was implemented in July 1993, under its terms GP's should undertake to record smoking status and they should offer a variety of interventions. They should target specific priority groups of patient's e.g. pregnant women, and have strategies in place for reaching and dealing with them . This particular targeting' has come under pressure as some see it as putting undue pressure an those priority' patients involved.
             A recent survey found that 96% of GP's accepted that smoking intervention was part of their role and almost all (99%) said that they recoded smoking status when their patients registered. Only 57% reported that they updated their records on smoking status routinely and 50% said they advised smokers to stop during almost all of their consultation. Over 76% said they advised smokers to cut down if they couldn't stop . .
             It is important for those professionals involved to understand more about a smoker's psychology so they can help in the most effective way. The most important factor determining success is without a doubt motivation. If a patient does not have this motivation then interventions however effective they have been proven will not work. Two ways of assessing the motivation are by asking these simple questions:.
             a) Would you give up smoking altogether if you thought you could do so easily?.
             b) How much do you want to stop smoking altogether?9.

             A model called The stage of change' has been devised which demonstrates the different psychological stages involved in smoking cessation. They are:.
             Precontemplation - not seriously considering quitting in the next six months.
             Contemplation - currently smoking and seriously considering quitting in the next six months.
             Preparation - seriously intending to quit in the next thirty days.
             Action - stopped smoking, having quit in the last 6 months.
             Maintenance - not currently smoking having abstained for over six months.
