A Raisin In The Sun: Analysis of Beneatha.
In the play, A Raisin in The Sun there are many obstacles that each character faces, one character in particular, Beneatha Younger and her character is what one would call strong and speaks up for what she believes in. She looks at people for whom they truly are, takes pride in her education to become a doctor, questions everything including God and she gets involved in activities to expand her horizons. Beneatha's is not your typical 20-year-old black woman in the 1950's because she goes to college and she tries to better her life without the help of a man to support her. Beneatha's character represents a black woman's feminist and unique goals in life in the late 1950's. .
In the scene, Beneatha made a point how she feels about a person on the inside. She felt others including Mama needed to understand that she looks beyond the surface of people. According to the text page 756, she explains to Mama: "Oh I just mean I couldn't ever be serious about George. He's-he's so shallow." Ruth replies by saying, "He's rich!" That is how Beneatha proves her point about looking beyond the surface. Beneatha does not want to be in a relationship with George simply because he can support her. However Mama and Ruth have a difficult time understanding her point of view. If anyone could see where the Youngers came from it could seem ridiculous to not want to be with a wealthy man like George. Beneatha's character is respectable for not falling for a man because of what he has. To this day, many women marry men for what they have. Beneatha does not listen when Mama and Ruth call her odd. She knows she would not be able to live with herself if she married George Murchison without having feeling anything for him. In part of scene one page 756, Beneatha states: "The Murchison's are honest to God-real-live-rich colored people, and the only people in the world who are more snobbish than rich white people are rich colored people"(756).
