TORA TORA TORA

Tora! Tora! Tora!, is essentially two films that slowly intertwine to tell one story of the events that lead to the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Both sides, American and Japanese are portrayed. The American forces are lead by Admiral Kimmel and the Japanese by Admiral Yamamoto. The movie shows the tensions between the two nations, and within the two nations, before the attack. It explains how the United States was aware of some sort of military offensive from the Japanese. They were not sure where, exactly, it was going to happen. It also shows the failure of the United States to initially respond to the threats posed to them by Japan before the actual attack. As the movie begins the Japanese are preparing for the attack. They first discuss their reasons for the attack, then test their bombers, and make their final plans for the assault. Most of the film is spent showing the Japanese preparation for the bombing and the U.S. forces trying to figure out what is happening. Various intercepted messages gave the American government a very small amount of concrete information upon which to act. The final parts of Tora! Tora! Tora! show the actual attack on Pearl Harbor. It made clear that no one really knew much about the coming attack.
Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, the conflicted commander of the Japanese fleet, is the man who has the duty of carrying out the attack on Pearl Harbor. He is a well educated military person. As a Harvard graduate and more familiar with the enemy, he believes his country is underestimating the Americans. He shows throughout the movie that he thinks Japan's military is acting out of greed and stupidity. The movie closes on his quote with his telling quotation: "I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve.".
Col. Rufus Bratton and Lt. Commander Alvin Kramer are two of the select few who are in the secret decoding room where the Japanese messages are intercepted.
