The Hundred Year's War

The hundred year's war was a war that lasted about one hundred years. Hence the name " The Hundred Year's War". This war was between England and France. From the 1330's to 1415 and during the time period France and England had had over 5 different kings. The hundred year's war was on and off, mostly off because there was the plague, and lots of other things that happened so they just put it off to the side.
The reason for the war was because the English king in 1330 was King Edward III, and the French king was King Phillip. Before King Phillip became king, King Edward had royal relatives who were in France and because of them he owned Aquitane a territory in France. However King Phillip ruled this area and King Edward did not like this one bit. Also Phillip didn't like it because Aquitane favoured King Edward and he thought they might revolt against him. King Edward was very determined to keep his land because Gascony, a town in Aquitane was a rich area because it was the centre of wine trade and since Edward owned this, it would make lots of money for him. Edward could not afford to loose this town so he prepared for war. This started The Hundred Years War.
Not only did Aquitane favour King Edward but also Flanders a French territory also favoured him, and this made Phillip nervous. However England was mad of the help Scotland was giving France.
Edward attacked France from the lower countries, winning small land battles but defeating a French fleet of ships at the battle of Sluis. King Edward also won the battle of Crecy In 1346, and besieged Calais and they surrendered in 1347 a year later. The English won the battle of Poitiers and captured King John II of France. After drawn out discussions and proposals, the Treaty of Bretigny was signed. England got to keep Calais and almost all of Aquitane, and a lot of money for the ransom of King John II who they had kidnapped.
