Survival

Epic of Survival: Shackleton was about a great ship that went down many years ago in Antarctica's Weddel Sea just at the outbreak of the first world war. One day on January 18, 1915 the ship was miles away from its destination and the ice closed in together forcing the whole ship to be surrounded with nowhere to go. The crew ended up staying in that same spot tell October 27th because they couldnt break through the ice. That day they where forced to abandon the ship because the of the pressure of the ice that was pushing against the ship over 9 months made the ship groan and quiver, windows splinter, and the deck timbers to gape and twist. The men spent that night on the ice in linen tents and the temperature was -16 degrees and most of the food supplies was trapped on the ship. The warmest clothes they had on were their woolen underwear and thin windbreaker's. They also never had any radio communication, and no one knew where they were. If the ice was to break they only salvaged 3 lifeboats which wasn't enough to hold all the men. The day after the abandonment of the ship Shackleton gathered his men and told them that they were going to try to march over the ice to Paulet Island which was 400 miles away. That plan was eventually abandoned because it was impossible to be done with all the supplies that needed to be carried so Shackleton decided of another plan which was to set camp on the drifting ice and see where it would take them until the boats would be able to be used again.
Ocean Camp was their new home until they decided to try to head north by northwest, which would hopefully carry them to Paulet Island which there was a hut of supplies.
In mid-January four teams of sledging dogs where shot because the ice was too treacherous for them to be safely used.
By March the northerly drift of the pack had carried them to Paulet Island but far too the east of it.
In April the ice cracked and Shackleton gave the order to launch the three boats.
