Dead Man Walking

Him and Jerry, the inmate, formed a very close relationship, and Joseph was probably the main cause of Jerry's conversion to Catholicism and his repentance of his sins. In Joseph's essay he stated, "One of the great sufferings of death row is the day to day brutality. Every detail of these men's lives says to them you don't deserve to live"(http://www.usccb.org/prolife/programs/rlp/01ros.htm). Joseph showed respect to Jerry simply by proving that someone does still care about him, still respects him as a person, and does want him to live.
I do not believe that the prison system treated Matthew with very much disrespect at all. It seemed most of the time he was treated decently by the guards. However, there were times when the guards would make comments to Sister Helen about how the men on death row did not deserve to live, and that Matthew deserved what was coming to him. There was also a moment at the end of the movie when Matthew was seeing his family for the last time, and his mother wanted to give him a hug. The guards pushed her away and said that it was not allowed. I do not think it was right for the guards not to allow them to embrace each other one last time. I think that people need to put themselves in the criminal's and his family's position for a moment and think about what they would want during their last hours together. The prison system could have showed him more dignity by treating him more like a human being and showing a little more compassion towards him and his family. In Joseph Ross's essay about his experience of being a spiritual advisor on death row, he mentions a few examples of how these inmates are stripped of their dignity. Once on death row, you are identified by a number rather than your name, you wear the same clothing as everyone else around you, and guards come into your cell whenever they want and take things from you and you have no choice or say in the matter (http://www.
