            Many people play a part in the history of America, but it is those that helped to .
             settle this wonderful country hundreds of years ago that play the biggest role. When it .
             comes to colonizing the New World, no one in history is more renown for it than Captain .
             John Smith and William Bradford. Both contributed greatly to the settlement of .
             America, but in doing so, they had to encounter many dangerous people and survive.
             through horrible conditions.
             Right upon arrival to America, John Smith already had trouble awaiting him. For .
             example, he was immediately captured by Indians and then threatened with death by their .
             leader, Powhatten. This shows that Smith was an extremely courageous man because .
             even after going through such a dangerous event, he remained in America and continued .
             to explore. Because he had such an intense hunger for knowledge, he would not let .
             anything hinder him from accomplishing his dream of journeying across America. In .
             addition to the fearful incident with the Indians, he was also severely burned in an .
             explosion in 1609,which caused him to return back home to England. This shows that .
             Smith was a very strong-willed man, because only five years later, he returned to .
             America once again. Smith was a man who believed in taking chances, and was willing .
             to endure much pain for the benefit of others. Through it all, Smith's journey was a great .
             Success and his heroic efforts are never to be forgotten.
             William Bradford encountered many horrific events as well. For example, while .
             aboard the Mayflower, almost half of the passengers died due to fierce weather .
             conditions. This shows that he was a very determined man, because many people would .
             have probably lost all hope of living an enjoyable life in America. His dream for freedom .
             is what helped him to survive, because he knew that if he could just make it to America, .
             he would have so much more to live for. In addition to harsh weather conditions, .
