Analysis of Goblin Market

Rossetti directly refers to the sense of restlessness in these quick lines. "Laura reared her glossy head and whispered like the restless brook.".
Relationships, sexual and otherwise are also heavily referred to in the poem. The relationship between Lizzie and Laura is never defined in one genre. There is a suggestion the relationship is somehow sexual, "With clasping arms and cautioning lips, With tingling cheeks and fingertips." This language of young emotion and uncertain sexuality hints to the reader another relationship under the surface. "Hugged and kissed her: Squeezed her and caressed her:" "Hug me, kiss me, suck my juices eat me, drink me, love me". Rossetti may use this language to push in the face of Victorian society something that was not ever talked about.
Lizzie and Laura's relationship is also represented as a religious and strong sisterhood. In the concluding paragraph the relationship is described as incomparable to any other, "For there is no friend like a sister in calm or stormy weather". Their story is a parable of how sisters should act, " how her sister stood/ in deadly peril to do her good". Their sacrifices for each other and alluded to as equal to religious acts; "have you tasted/ For my sake the fruit forbidden?" Throughout the poem refers to the Fall of Adam and Eve, however, the act of tasting the fruit and giving in to temptation is not shown to be explicitly bad. QUOTE.
Goblin Market can be interpreted in many ways; one of the more obvious ones is as a religious parable. There are multiple morals to the story, showing what the "right" thing to do is. "Then if we lost our way what should we do?" The idea that Christ is the right path to take in life and temptation is the wrong path is obviously alluded to here. Lizzie is represented as the more moral of the two sisters, and "should" be the one to follow. ""Oh," cried Lizzie, "Laura, Laura, You should not peep at goblin men.
