The Ideal Frontiersman in Respect to the Characters of the L

"The mountain men had to have very good relations with Indians to try avoiding hostile confrontations. This consisted of learning the language and cultural traditions (MM: Pioneers of the West), and earning their trust. Magua had an advantage in this skill because of his relationship with different tribes because he was originally a member of the Maqua tribe but later adopted as a member of the Cherokee tribe (Cooper 145). He already had back ground knowledge in language and traditions. His only problem was he was looked down on by the Maqua and shunned by the tribe. Magua was an expert in the field of concealment. Mountain men should be like a rabbit quick and light footed. In order to be quick and light on your feet most frontiersmen made the use of moccasins as did Magua (Cooper 31). "Does Magua dare to leave the print of his moccasin in the woods? I have been on his trail and know that (the footprints) number as many as the fingers of my two hands." (Cooper 26) In addition special clothing with newly invented camouflage helped the frontiersmen blend in with their surroundings. The most important skill to a frontiersman was the ability to use their tools and weapons. Hawkeye had "The eye of a hunter or scout, whichever he may be, was small, quick keen and restless." (Cooper 22) Hawkeye got his nickname because of his accuracy with a hunting rifle. His partner and mentee Chingachook had skills with a bow and arrow showed by his ability to kill a deer from a lengthy distance (Cooper 63). Because of his ability to be silent and conceal himself magua's weapon of choice was a knife. He had the ability to stalk his enemy and get close enough to him to stab him. In order to be skilled with weapons frontiersmen needed to have them to defend themselves against danger.
"Mountain men must be good with the rifle, the bow, and the knife for there is no single tool for every situation.
