Falling Leaves

The literature works, Falling Leaves, is about Adeline Yen Mah's life. Adeline is a part of a Chinese family whom was somewhat wealthy. Ever since Adeline was born, she has been; blamed, abused, and emotionally assaulted by her own family members. Does Adeline have any more obstacles that cause complications? Does Adeline have any support from her family members and do these people help Adeline overcome these obstacles? How does Adeline react when her father blames her for her mother's death?.
Adeline's true mother died shortly after giving birth to Adeline. Her father blamed Adeline and never forgave her for the death of her mother. When Adeline was older, she accepted the blame for her mother. In a Chinese family, all of the children have to have respect for their elders. Therefore, Adeline had no method of convincing her father that the incident was not her fault.
After Adeline mother's death, her father became acquainted to another woman, Jeanne Prosperi. The children called her Niang, Chinese for stepmother. Niang increased the amount of problems for Adeline. Naing never gave any support or encouragement for any school activities Adeline achieved. In addition, Naing not only attacked Adeline verbally but also physically as well, slapping her and accusing her for actions that Adeline did not execute. In example, Adeline's friends came over to her house to surprise Adeline for accomplishing the campaign for class president. Naing became furious at Adeline saying that she invited her friends over to show off their household. Naing slapped Adeline and told her to send her friends off back home. Adeline had no choice but to obey her stepmother.
Adeline did however have Aunt Ba Ba, whom guided Adeline through her toughest obstacles. Aunt Ba Ba nurtured Adeline when she was a child. Aunt Ba Ba always praised Adeline's accomplishments in school or any activity. Aunt Ba Ba was dependant on Adeline's father and stepmother for money so she never interfered with the arguments of Naing and Adeline.
