To Kill a Mockinbird:Courage

According to the novel, courage is when you know you"re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. According to the dictionary, it means to disregard fear. Another definition could be to act on your own beliefs, values and morals. In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, courage is a main theme throughout. It plays a valuable part in the course of the book. .
An example of one person in the novel [who displayed courage] can be Mrs. Dubose. She is whom Atticus refers to when he says, " she died beholden to nothing and nobody. She is the bravest person I ever knew." Mrs. Dubose was dying slowly but surely, and she was on the drug Morphine to keep her pain away. When she knew she was near her demise, she told herself she was going to slip away without any chemicals in her body. She was going to die peacefully, without any addictions, without her addiction to morphine. So, she had Jem read to her everyday, and everyday she went longer and longer without a shot of Morphine until she was no longer dependant on it. She may have died in a lot of pain, but she died courageously, she died without her body numbed. .
Atticus Finch is another example of courage. He defended Tom Robinson, which is a very courageous act to do when being a white man. He didn't refuse Judge Taylor when he assigned this case to him. He didn't back down when people in the town began calling him a nigger lover. He just responded by saying, "I love all people." He defended Mr. Robinson because he felt he needed to, because it was the right thing to do. Having to go through all the name-callings, the ridicule, the hatred was a true act of courage. He didn't care if it was socially unacceptable to be in favour of a black man; he only cared that it was morally right. .
Another courageous person is Calpurnia. Calpurnia was quite the courageous person at the First Purchase Church with Jem and Scout.
