Emergency Medical Technician Report

Have you ever been in serious need of emergency medical help? If so, most likely you required the services of an emergency medical technician or paramedic. These very serious workers are trained to respond to every medical crisis possible that may occur in everyday living to emergencies caused by high-risk situations. Emergency medical technicians and paramedics work in high stress and even high-risk situations, but most EMTs and paramedics will tell you that the stress and strain is well worth the extreme sense of fulfillment and satisfaction of saving another human being's life. In this paper will discuss the salary and employment outlook, work tasks, settings, tools, related occupations, training, related majors, and advancement in the EMT/Paramedic field.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the federal government, the EMT/Paramedic field is classified as a large category of employment with 138,276 workers employed as of 2000-2001. The estimated outlook for employment is expected to grow tremendously from 2002-2006. The need for more EMTs/Paramedics is contributed to several factors. One reason this field is growing is the number of EMTs/Paramedics retiring out of the field due to age/physical problems (back/neck/leg strain). Another reason for rapid growth is the increase in the elderly population. A great deal of accidents that occur with older individuals are handled by EMTs/Paramedics and as this demand increases, so does the need for workers to handle the demand. .
Work tasks that are handled by EMTs and Paramedics range from automobile accidents, heart attacks, near drowning, urgent childbirth, and gunshot wounds to broken bones, allergic reactions, and even non-emergency transportation to hospitals on rare occasions. Each emergency requires fast response and immediate care by the EMT/Paramedic. With the help of the dispatcher, the EMT/Paramedic arrives at unknown scene and must evaluate the nature of the emergency and must decide on an appropriate action.
