Thw Good and The Wicked in King Lear



             Lear is the king of Britain. He is an old and nave man. He has decided to retire and to divide his kingdom amongst his three daughters according to their love for him. He is not aware that actions speak louder than words. His two daughters Goneril and Regan claim that they love him a lot and they try to gather love words in order to describe their fake love for their father. Lear believes them and despises Cordelia who could not have words to describe her love for her father. Although she explains her point of view to her father and tries to open his eyes to the reality of his daughters, she fails for Lear values appearances above reality. Unwittingly, he gives away his paternal love and abandons his daughter who loves him the most. Lear banishes the Earl of Kent for defending Cordelia. Although this is unwise of him, he has good intentions. He wants to prevent any future conflict between the heirs. Lear thinks that he does the right thing by banishing Kent and getting rid of his hard-hearted and unthankful daughter, but " Time shall unfold what plighted cunning hides-. After he splits his wealth among his insincere daughters, Lear is not treated well by his daughters and the whole retinue. Lear decides to live with his daughters; however, both of them do not welcome him and consider him to be imbalanced mentally. Lear realizes the truth about his daughters. He has no one beside him but Kent and The Fool. Lear is now homeless in the storm. He is extremely angry and sad for the loss of his daughters and his entire kingdom, yet his good nature leads him to think that he deserves what is happening to him for he did not take care of the poor properly. He knows now how it is like to be poor and homeless. -I have taken too little care of this-. He thinks that the luxurious life he lived was at the expense of the poor. Lear is eager to see Cordelia. When he does, he kneels; he is ready to poison himself if Cordelia demands that.
