The Crucible

What is the mean of crucible? Well the dictionary defines crucible as a severe test or trial, but how does it apply to the play The Crucible It applies to the play because the people during that time that were accused of being witches or having dealings with the devil were put through severe test. They where haunted and tortured just to hear them say that they where involved with witchcraft. The fact that they where hanging people who where accused of witchcraft that would not confess and the things that were going on around the town itself made a lot of people change the way the felt because of all the things they had to undergo, but no matter what some of the people underwent they still would not change there attitudes and they way they felt about witchcraft. The way that Reverend Hale,Abigail Williams, and Mary Warren change and the way that they stay the same after all they undergo is interesting.
The way that makes it interesting is some of the character that change. Take Reverend Hale for example the word that i would use to describe Reverend Hale at the beginning of the play is naive, and the reason i say naive is because in Act two and three after all the information that he has come up with he doesn't realize until it's to late the these people that he are sentencing to death are innocent. By time the end of the play comes Reverend Hale has changed he now tries to save the people that he has sentenced to death. The word that i would use to describe Rev. Hale now is in a way enlightened reformed, like in Act four when tries to John Proctor to confess to save himself. After all he underwent he has seen that everything is not always what it seems.
Seeing other hurt for no reason changes the way people look a things, but not for Abigail Williams. The word that I would use to describe Abigail is self-centered. Abigail is the type of girl who looks out for herself. It is shown in Act one when she place all the blame on Tituba to save herself.
