Domestic Violence Hurts Children As Well As Adults

             Fritz, author of the article "Domestic violence hurts children as well as adults", has proven another point of view on the subject of domestic violence in the Brown University Child and Adolescent Behavior Letter. Gregory Fritz states that domestic violence has been around for centuries but has recently been proven that it also affects the children in the same household. With the facts of Gregory Fritz's article we may open the eyes of the police department and anyone else involved with domestic violence and show that the ones really getting hurt are not the adults but the children and adolescents.
             It is stated that domestic violence has only been a legal issue for many years. It was thought of as a personal and private thing. Police departments and certain courts started to pay more attention to domestic violence as a serious problem. This occurred soon after the women's movement in the 1970's. It was usually only looked at as a male against women situation in which "typically a male perpetrator and a battered woman."(Fritz 1).
             Gregory Fritz implies that the exposure to the violence would hurt a child's social, emotional and physical way of growing up. All age groups are affected even if it starts as an infant up to being a teenager. Young children may show signs of regressive behavior and sleep disturbances. On the other hand older children reactions can range from depression up to affecting their academic performance. Adolescents are the main ones that suffer when it comes to being a witness of domestic violence in their household. They suffer from "higher levels of aggression, conduct disorder, truancy and revenge seeking."(Fritz 2) A very important concern may be the ones that get up to suffering from post-traumatic stress.
             Services attend battered women or any victim of domestic violence. Fritz states that these services can not care for the exposed children due to their lack of training for the situation.
