Gaia

Not alive in a sense that it is a thinking being with a conscious, but more like a plant such as a tree that simply lives with no general purpose than to just live. There is evidence surrounding this theory such as the temperature of the Earth, "there has been a 25% increase in heat from the sun since life began but surface temperature has remained approximately constant." There is also a combination of gasses in the atmosphere such as nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and methane and other gasses in small trace amounts. If these gasses were in different proportions from what they are right now the temperature of the Earth could change radically and life may not exist in the same way as it does now. But since life does exist it keeps the gasses in the right proportions allowing things to function properly. So as you can see there is an obvious relation between the two which can help prove that the Earth is indeed alive. It also relates to one of the laws of ecology in that everything is connected to everything else, and since it is all connected together it could be said once again that it is all one super organism.
The Gaia theory has received a lot of criticism and lots of people are not so quick to accept that the planet is alive. Many scientists argue that if the planet is alive where is its need to reproduce and transfer its genes onto future generations?.
In response Lovelock decided to do an experiment which would consist of a computer simulation. This simulation would include a planet, in which the only form of life on it would be white and black daisies, and would have similar characteristics as Earth like a rising solar input from the sun. This computer model of the planet and daisies was named Daisyworld. The experiment was conducted and the results were as follows: "Early in the life of the planet conditions are cool; only at the equator is it warm enough for seeds to germinate and there the black daisies have the advantage as they more readily absorb what heat there is.
