While they were being sad they came with an outlandish idea, this would be to leak to the press that one American soldier was left behind, and he didn't know that the fighting had ceased. They would then make the soldier and the President a hero by having the President save the fighting soldier and bring him home.
They look through to see if they could find the perfect soldier for them to bring home. They do, they find a soldier with the name of Schumann. They create a digitaly mastered picture of him that they could show to the American public, and they wrote a song that they put out on the radio about him coming home. The people loved it. The producer was in his prime, he was making things happen and creating stories that people love.
Then when it came to getting Schumann to go along with the part they found out that he had been imprisoned for rape. And that if he wasn't watched at all times he could be on the move again. When their flight went down in a small town in the middle of nowhere Schumann found a girl to chase, he tried to get to her and rape her but her father shot Schumann. In their desperation they created a funeral for Schumann saying that he died coming home. He was made a national hero, and the President had more favor with the people than he had ever had before.
The entire movie was about politics and how the news can be skewed so that people believe what they are being told, because they don't know anything else. Now there are some times in history where this could really could be the case. Not exactly the same but similar. There has been events where the presidents of our country haven't exactly lied to us, but they create real other events where we pay attention instead of looking at what they are doing wrong.
