For example, I was recently traveling to a place called Florida City, which ten years ago was an upscale, highly desirable location to live. After being lost for hours, I stopped at a rest stop to get directions and an old white woman asked me "Why are you going to the ghetto? It's only colored people there, every white person moved out of there years ago." This statement demonstrates two things; one, that certain white people see areas dominated by black skinned people as "ghettos", and two, that white people have an inclination to migrate from an area when they feel "threatened" by black presence.
Politically, the language of discrimination is still around. It shows up in the discussions regarding "affirmative action" in regards to school admissions and hiring and promotion policies. Those opposed to affirmative action are called racist. Those for affirmative action are accused of supporting unconstitutional preferences based solely on race or gender, not qualification. Since most people helped by affirmative action are women or minorities, this discourse serves to separate people.
Just a few weeks ago, Senator Trent Lott, from Mississippi, was removed from his position as Senate Majority Leader. He lost his position for making a blatantly racist statement, indicating racism is alive. He said that the country would have been better off if we had elected Strom Thrumond as President in 1948. He said the country would not have suffered so many problems in the ensuing years. The problem was that Senator Thurmond ran for President on a segregation now and forever platform. What Lott basically said was that segregation would have been better for the country than the civil rights movement and ultimately more freedom and opportunity for African Americans. This attitude and language perpetuates stereotypes and serves to form a wall between people. .
In my opinion, as well as many others, the worst decision the Supreme Court ever made was in 1896.
