The UN Convention on the Rights of a Child

For the future, they will start educating people on child marriage; provide money to turn in child marriages. They are also going to get celebrities to speak out against child marriage. Another area of concern in India is the rise and status of street children. The definition of a street child is basically a child who has been abandoned or forced by their family to live on the streets. For the past few decades, street children have been a problem that the government hasn't been addressing. Children that live on the street are virtually illiterate; only about ½ have any educational skills. There is much prejudice against street children and many people mistreat them. For the past 40 years street children have been a problem, in 1960 18% of them lived in urban areas, and in 1992 about 26% lived in urban areas. Many children band together and commit crimes, or partake in child labor. In 1991 84% of crimes committed by children between the ages of 7-16 were committed by children living on the streets. These children are sometimes abused by authorities when caught, which caused the National Abuse Commission in India to release a report in 1979 on how authorities should behave. Currently there are many dangers for street children. Some of which being road accidents, diseases such as typhoid and malaria, and the police who are main harm factors. In 1995 between February and March, out of 100 street children surveyed, 60 had been abused. India is not in compliance with Article 7, all children are not registered at birth, and don't go to school. It is also not in compliance with Article 28; education is not free or mandatory for all children. Article 9 states that no child shall be abandoned, yet children are still being abandoned and not staying in contact with family, therefore India is not in compliance with it. It will probably be a long time until this problem is solved. The government needs to plan more efficiently.
