Whiskey rebellion

Although both rebellions have their similarities, they both have their differences as well. The farmers in Pennsylvania endured many problems that led up to the staging of a revolt. The problem with the Indians persisted with farmers and carried on for some time with little or no gains in stopping the attacks. The attacks by Indians were so vicious it was said that "almost everyone has known somebody that lost a wife or child to the Indians."(p.71) These vicious attacks were enough to launch a series of battles against the Indians to protect their land as well as their livelihood.(p.94) The farmer's wanted to be able establish a strong trade with whom ever they wanted and to do this they wanted access to the Mississippi river. Access to the Mississippi was crucial because according to most "the Mississippi would furnish us with trade" this meant that opening up the Mississippi to trade would enable farmers to extend their trade out West.(p.52) The problem with this was that the Mississippi was under Spanish control and with that came heavy tax on goods. This angered farmers because they felt nothing was being done to correct this problem with the trade route on the Mississippi.(52) The Indian problem could no longer be ignored. A series of expeditions were launched in order to fight the Indians and it was decided to put a tariff on whiskey. The westerners saw this as a problem because they felt this tax was having them pay for a solution but at the same time they felt cheated because they are now being taxed on one of their only commodities.(p99) What angered people the most about the tax was not only were they putting a high tax on whiskey that was sold but farmers also had to pay a tax on what they consumed as well.(105) .
