Allergies


            
             When I hear someone wheezing or sneezing, I often ask if he or she has a cold. For the majority of the time the answer is no, they just have allergy problems. I just assume that they have a cold because of the symptoms they show. I am coming to realize that allergies are becoming more common than the common cold. The number of allergy cases has soared over the years. Some of the largest research being conducted focuses what allergies actually are, what causes their presence and treatments available, and whether our lifestyles could very well be affecting this medical problem. .
             "Allergies occur when the immune system mounts a defense against harmless substances such as pollen or animal dander" (Shute 47). Even with today's technology, it is unclear why we react the way we do to the things we allergic to. Allergies can be different for everyone. Someone may have a food allergy, such as seafood, and someone else may be allergic to a type of tree. Other allergies include but aren't limited to nuts, pollen, nickel, latex and animals. For most of us who spend a lot of time indoors, we have to battle with things like dust mites and mold. "There are even microscopic creatures in the spider family that live in pillows and mattresses and feast on flakes of shed human skin, which has become a serious health concern" (Shute 48).
             Although there are no definite treatments for allergies, we do know how some of them are triggered. Of course some of the obvious are food and animal allergies. I say obvious, assuming one knows that they are allergic to a particular thing/s. When someone has a reaction to a food or animal, they should definitely try to stay away from it.
