"1 This means that modernization is going to become very important in Afghanistan. Nojumi refers to it as "The Theory of Mass Mobilization,"2 trying to get a political organization to make wide spread changes. The People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan (PDPA) tried to do just that. In 1979, they wanted to revolutionize the social and economic order and change the national ideology of Afghanistan.3 The people of Afghanistan didn't like this at all. As a result, this started a war against the PDPA, and the Soviets that backed the Democratic Party. The war lasted roughly ten years, killing tons of soldiers on both sides, and tons of Afghan civilians. Then on February 15, 1989 after much pressure from the U.S. and the United Nations, the Soviet Union pulled its last troops out of Afghanistan. They did this under the impression that the PDPA would still be the government, but they would have to make it more suitable for the Afghan people.4 Soon after the Soviets left Afghanistan, the PDPA collapsed leaving a vacancy for leadership in the country causing more fighting in Afghanistan. .
The fighting continued with groups trying to gain power in Afghanistan. The country at this time was a mess. It was called the Afghan Civil War, the people at this time were looking for some sort of stability and leadership, something that they haven't had for years. Then on October 1994 a convoy traveling from Quetta to Afghanistan was attacked by a group of armed men. While the men were attacking the convoy, another group of armed men arrived and started fighting the attackers, and defeated them. This group that saved the convoy was the Taliban.5 After they defeated the convoy they marched to the city of Kandahar and easily defeated the Mujahidin group that had control of the city. Before long the Taliban was sweeping threw Afghanistan taking over every city they came across, and defeating any resistance that came in there way.
