Dramatic Change


            Is it possible for someone's view on life to change drastically in just a couple of days? In the novel Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury Charles Halloway changes from being depressed to being a happy and content. In "Arrivals" Charles feels alone and unhappy with his age, in "Pursuits" he starts to become involved with his son and take charge of his destiny, and in "Departures" Charles is free of all temptations and regrets. At the beginning of the book, Charles isolates himself from the rest of society.
             In "Arrivals," Charles Halloway feels unhappy with his life. Primarily, Charles is very sad and unhappy because he is fifty four years old. He wishes that he could be younger. Also, Charles doesn't talk to his son much and feels to old to have a young son. Will is worried about his father and fears that the carnival might take advantage of his dad's unhappiness. From the first section of the book to the second section of the book, Charles" personality and view on life change.
             In the section "Pursuits," Charles begins to communicate with his son and become involved with him. First, Charles thinks of a plan for Will and Jim and helps them by researching the carnival in the library. Next, he rejects Mr. Darks offer to be young and shows that he is no longer tempted to become younger. Finally, when the Dust Witch arrives to come and stop his heart, Mr. Halloway defeats her with sounds of laughter and makes her retreat for the carnival. This shows that he has had some kind of victory over the carnival. From this section of the novel to the final section, Charles Halloway changes drastically.
             In the final section, "Departures," Charles Halloway becomes free of all temptations and regrets. First, by carving a smile onto a bullet and shooting the Dust Witch, Charles kills one of the autumn people. This shows that there is still hope. Second, to save Jim, Charles has to go through the mirror maze and in the maze he sees an old man.
