The Man in the maze

In fact, with his new hair cut Larry himself observes that the person he sees in the mirror no longer reflects himself, but the face of his father, a face of responsibility. A few years later Larry has decided to fashion a maze in his own yard and becomes absorbed in his new project. He and Dorrie as a result of this project experience marital problems when Dorrie stresses the need to live in a larger and more modern home now that they can afford to, and Larry does not want to move because he has invested so much in his new project and can not imagine leaving it behind. Eventually, and before his maze has reached maturity, Dorrie becomes fed up and hires a bulldozer to come plow the maze down without so much as a word to Larry about it. Larry learns this when his neighbour calls him at work to inquire about the large machine, however by the time he arrives at home half of his cherished maze is ripped up. Larry in turn makes another life altering decision, and leaves Dorrie and his now six year old son Ryan. Later Larry also leaves his job at the floral shop, that has recently been taken over by a bigger company and become "Flower city", and decides to take up designing mazes full time in New York where he meets his second wife, Beth. Beth is different from Dorrie in every way. In fact, Beth seems almost perfect with her elegance, intelligence, and beauty, while Dorrie is down to earth and average for the most part. Later though, Larry and Beth are divorced also when Beth decides to live the life of a nun after she and Larry had attempted living on different continents while she pursued a job opportunity in Britain. It is hard to say which of these choices Larry makes are mistakes since something good comes of each of them. .
"A mistake that led to another mistake that lead to another. People make mistakes all the time, so many mistakes that they aren't mistakes any more, [they are] just positive and negative charges shooting back and forth and moving you along.
