Id Ego and Superego

A theme that has been frequently discussed in our class during this past month is theid?,ego?, andsuperego? of characters in stories. Several stories we have read share this theme within them. Some people might be confused with the real meaning of this theme. Id? stands for what a person wants to do. It is about basic human needs and desires such as hunger, greed, lust, safety, etc. Superego is what a person ought to do. It is the big picture. Last but not least, anego? is basically choosing between the above two. Some people may lean more toward the Id in their actions than others. What this theme is basically saying is that everyone has a different personality no matter how you look at it. .
One of the stories we have read that shows this theme isThe Use of Force?. This story was about a doctor who is unexpectedly dealing with a very hard to handle patient. The doctor was nice to the little girl at first and politely asked her to open her mouth for inspection. It demonstrated that his superego was active and that he really somewhat cared about this girl. Id? finally kicked in when the doctor was actually enjoying torturing this little girl by getting her to pry her mouth open. This story showed that at any minute yourid? could overpower thesuperego? or vice versa. It all depends on your surroundings.
Next, the story calledEnemies? also had an example of this theme. This story was about another doctor that has been asked for help in the most inconvenient time. His son had just died and a man came to his door asking to go somewhere. Hisid? was leaning towards the action of asking the man to leave but his superego came into effect. He talked to the man and he told the doctor that his wife had just had a heart attack. They both learn at the end that she was faking the heart attack and that his wife was cheating on him. They were both surprised and the doctor was a bit angry that his time did basically get wasted.
