Hamlet realizes that these two are being used by Claudius to dupe him into going to England with the ulterior motive of having the King of England execute him. While they are divulged into the king's affairs, Hamlet switches the execution notes. The following day, pirates take Hamlet captive. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern continue their voyage to England and this trip proves to be their last. Hamlet persuades the pirates to deliver him to Denmark. .
The person who sticks by Hamlet through this whole event is Horatio. We love Hamlet, then, for whatever reasons Horatio loves him. Of Horatio we know best that what distinguishes him from Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, and indeed Polonius, Ophelia, Laertes, and Gertrude, is that Claudius cannot use him? (Bloom 5). Not only does Horatio look for the best in Hamlet, he also looks out for Hamlet. Horatio tells Hamlet about the ghost, profile of Old King Hamlet. He tells Hamlet what has been going on and allows Hamlet to express his feelings. But let this same be presently performed / Even while men's minds are wild, lest more mischance / On plots and errors happen? (V.ii.422-424). The apprehension Horatio voices about the instability ofmen's minds? can best be understood in the context of a recurring concern throughout the play with popular unrest, an anxiety known to many in the play's original audiences, especially as it relates to the succession? (Kurland 293). Horatio, like Hamlet, follows the king's orders, but both have repugnance for the king.
